Every once in a while a car will simply take your breath away, not necessarily because of it’s price, it’s power or even performance capabilities, but just simply because of what it is. The Superformance Shelby Daytona, for me, has done exactly that.
The achievements of the original Shelby Daytona are unquestionable and sit easily aside the likes of the GT40, the Ferrari GT250, the Shelby Cobra and so the list can go on.
Neither can the DNA of the car be brought into question.
The body was designed by the same designer as the original Shelby Daytona, Peter Brock, albeit a slightly larger design than the original to improve both suspension design and interior space, with the chassis the same seamless round mild steel tubing, jig welded into a very rigid space frame with torsional stiffness of 6000lb-feet per degree.
The powertrain is arguably as important as a good chassis and in this case is provided by the renowned Roush 402R performance Ford Racing Sportsman (Windsor) V8 engine producing some 515bhp, complete with forged crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons, fuel being delivered by a Roush tuned Holley 770CFM carburettor.
Stopping performance is provided by dual piston Australian PBR callipers and vented discs.
The transmission comes in the form of a Tremec T-56 6 speed gearbox, with the same ratios seen in the legendary Mustang Cobra R.
And finally all of this power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a BTR Hydratrack limited slip differential that was considered probable the most capable of it’s day.
This hand made glass fibre cloth/polyester resin body is finished to perfection, this particular car being finished in Indigo Blue with Wimbledon White stripes and in first class condition.
Manufactured in late 2004 and first registered 2005, this car has covered just over 6500 miles and is the epitome of the word ‘stunning’.
With a fully documented history this car is without doubt an important part of the history of Caroll Shelby along with his legendary fight with Ferrari to win dominance at Le Mans. You can almost hear the shouts of indignation as his life long friend, and accomplished racing driver Ken Miles. chalked up another fastest lap at Willow Springs in California with the roar of the Daytona.
Even though a replica, this car has the roots and mechanical presence of the original Shelby Daytona. Rarely available in right hand drive and believed to be 1 of 9 ,this is not a car for the faint hearted but is certainly a must for the discerning motorsport enthusiast looking for that special car.
