Description
Stratton Motor Company is delighted to offer this exceptional example of the highly sought-after 1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon.
The story of the DB4 begins in 1947, when industrialist Sir David Brown acquired Aston Martin after spotting a classified advertisement in The Times. Under his ownership, Aston Martin established itself as a formidable force in international motorsport, with the legendary DBR racing cars competing successfully against the likes of Ferrari and other leading manufacturers.
By the late 1950s, Brown turned his attention to creating world-class road cars. Working with the renowned Milanese design house Carrozzeria Touring, Aston Martin introduced elegant, lightweight coachwork using the innovative Superleggera construction method. Complementing this beautiful design was the engineering brilliance of Tadek Marek, whose all-alloy 3.7-litre twin-cam straight-six engine became one of Aston Martin’s most celebrated powerplants, serving in the DB4, DB5, DB6 and early DBS models for well over a decade.
Introduced in 1958, the DB4 became the first of Aston Martin’s iconic ‘DB trilogy’ and is widely regarded as the purest and most elegant of the three. It also provided the foundation for two of the marque’s most desirable derivatives: the legendary DB4 GT and the ultra-rare DB4 GT Zagato.
Produced across five distinct series, the Series II is easily recognised by its distinctive one-piece ‘cathedral’ rear light assemblies, making it one of the most desirable early variants.
This particular example has been exceptionally well cared for throughout its life. It benefited from an extensive 18-month restoration completed in 1999 at a cost of approximately £44,000. In 2014, the car received a complete repaint in the iconic Silver Birch finish, forever associated with James Bond’s DB5, while the interior was beautifully retrimmed in new leather hides to complement the fresh exterior.
The engine was replaced by Aston Martin Lagonda in June 1970, adding another interesting chapter to the car’s documented history. The odometer currently displays just 2,981 miles.
Beautifully presented and steeped in Aston Martin heritage, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of Britain’s most iconic grand tourers. Combining elegant Touring styling, Tadek Marek’s legendary straight-six engine and a comprehensive restoration history, this DB4 Series II represents an outstanding example of one of the most significant Aston Martins ever built.
